Levels of Cover

As with most vehicle insurance, there are different levels of insurance for minibuses available: third party, third party, fire & theft, or fully comprehensive.

Any vehicle on UK roads must have third party only (TPO) insurance as a bare minimum in order to be compliant with the law. However, how you use your minibus dictates what kind of insurance you need.

However, this basic level of cover is rarely broad enough to protect minibus owners and operators from the many inherent risks they face. TPO covers damage to the other vehicle in the event of an accident, but will not cover your own.

It is highly recommended that you take out a comprehensive policy that covers a wide range of elements, including public liability, breakdown cover, and legal costs resulting from a claim made against you. Not only will you need to protect your vehicle and driver, but your passengers need to have peace of mind as well.

Reducing Your Premium

There are some steps you can take to keep your premiums to a minimum. Ensuring your minibus is safe and secure when not in use will reduce the risk of it being stolen, which insurance brokers will take into account. You can also install a black box in your minibus, which will record your driving data. This data is then passed on to your broker who will calculate a premium price based on how safely you drive – this is called telematics insurance.

Minibus Usage

As mentioned, the way you use your minibus will help you define the relevant insurance type. For example, if the minibus is used for hire and reward purposes, it will need to be covered by a taxi insurance policy. However, if it is used privately for no financial gain, you can look at van insurance policies provided it has fewer than nine seats. If it has more than nine seats, you should look at a more specialist policy (like coach insurance, for example).

Frequently Asked Questions About Minibus Insurance

    • What does minibus insurance cover?
We can offer a range of minibus insurance policies that cover you whether you use your minibus for business or personal use, as well as if you use the vehicle as part of charity work. Minibuses are rarely cheap, which is why we give our customers the option to cover their vehicle with GAP insurance that will pay out the total cost of the vehicle as well as any finance owed in the event of a total loss. This means that you don’t have to worry about finance bills or being able to afford a new minibus in the future, which can be extremely important if you are in charge of transporting members of your community!
    • What information do I need to provide?
We ask for personal information as well as information on the usage of your minibus so that we can find a policy that is suitable for your needs. Some other information we require is the value of your vehicle, how many passengers you intend to carry and how many drivers will be using the vehicle. Finally, we ask when it suits you for us to get in contact, so that arranging your insurance can be done easily and at a time when it is convenient for you!
    • Can another group use our minibus under our insurance?
You may be able to find this information within your policy documents, if not, then you will need to contact your minibus insurance broker to check. This can be done via telephone, or via email. However, it should be okay for another group to use the minibus and there should be no additional costs involved either.
    • Can we take the minibus abroad?
You will need to check with your particular minibus insurance provider whether you are covered to go abroad or not. It is likely that minibus insurers will have guidelines for taking your vehicle abroad. These guidelines may be detailed within your insurance policy documents.
    • Can we remove seats from our minibus?
Yes, however you will have to notify the DVLA, and then tell the minibus insurance provider so that they can update your policy if needed. Such modifications can alter the amount you will pay for your insurance. This is something that will be discussed with you, however, it will be a good idea to check with your insurer before you remove the seats.
    • What types of minibus insurance are there?
There are several different types of minibus insurance. These include the following: minicab insurance, public hire minibus insurance, social, domestic and pleasure minibus insurance, commercial minibus insurance, school minibus insurance, residential or care home minibus insurance, charity minibus insurance, and scout group minibus insurance.
    • Can I get insured if I do not have a Full UK driving licence?
Most minibus insurers will require an individual to have held a Full UK driving licence for a certain period of time, sometimes this can be up to two years. If you are unsure then you will need to check with your insurer by either reading through your policy documents, or by contacting them via telephone or email.
